My Friday Afternoon at The Death Set Music Video Shoot~3/11/11

At the last moment, I heard that the Death Set was making a music video for their new single “We are going anywhere man” off of their new album “Michel Poiccard” which is available here to preview and purchase; iTunes too! Before I talk about the awesome video shoot, let me get a review in of the new album since I just got my hands on it.

This is the Death Set’s second full release album, after their fantastic debut album Worldwide. From the start, you know that this album was made to honor the late Beau Velasco. It is a 17 track monster of an album. Something that strikes you is the change of tone in this album. It is uplifting, and sad, happy, and full of spaz. The album starts off with a recording of Beau. Afterward, the first single “Slap Slap Slap Pound Up Down Snap” is a great start. All about the awesome handshake that the Death Set does with all of their friends, with some lyrical pimping of NinjaSonik and Cerebral Ballzy too. Check it out below:

Every song is very good and memorable. I find myself humming the chorus of “7pm woke up an hour ago”, “Its another day” and “yo david chase you p.o.v. shot me in the head”. There are some spaz songs that will have you giggling and headbanging too like “Kittens inspired by Kittens” meow, and “Too much fun for regrets”. Some of the other songs channel the memory of Beau Velasco like “is that a french dog” which has a recording of Beau talking about the french or “I miss you Beau Velasco” and “Is it the end again” which are sad songs with what I believe to be well written lyrics. The final song I want to talk about is “I’ve been searching for a song called fashion” which starts off with a recording of Beau coming up with a new riff. It is grainy and lo-fi, potentially for a future song. Then when the recording ends, the riff continues roaring in hi-fi going into the song. I think it is a good way to honor a friend; when his idea is finished and becomes a full song even after he has passed away.

The video shoot took place on a Bushwick apartment building where The Death Set live, at first taking place on the rooftop, with brilliant blue skies and warm weather; one of the first nice days this year. All the rain clouds from the morning were gone as well. I brought both of my cameras to record some behind the scenes video and to take some awesome pictures. As people started showing up, we got behind the band and rocked out while the video was recorded. Complaints were received, so we did a few takes and headed indoors. I made sure to act as crazy as possible; to make for the best footage possible. Crowd surfing twice on the roof and twice indoors; while starting Dan on his crowdsurf inside and helping Geo Savage crowdsurf and hang off the pipe in the Death Set’s living room. A lot of people came; pretty girls and lots of chill dudes. There was also some recording of people in slow motion spinning in a chair, I don’t know how the footage will be used but its gonna work somehow. The best moment was my final crowdsurf for the second to last take, when I crowd surfed to the front with the camera in my face and someone slipped on a pair of sunglasses onto my face which was all sorts of badassery whilst I was screaming down at Rev. McFly under me. It makes me think of this:

Below are pictures of the event taken by me and by Brock Fetch who is awesome at what he does.

Thanks a lot to Jah Jah for taking pictures with my cam while I was raging on the roof, to Brock Fetch for awesome photos of the event and of me, to C Flores and Geo Savage for helping me surf the crowd, and to the muthafucking Death Set for putting up such an awesome event.

The music video will be released April 1st, and will simultaneously release with my behind the scenes footage which has been cut with “Kittens inspired by Kittens”. Be on the lookout for this short funny video.

The Death Set are playing their first NYC show for this record, dubbing it the NYC release party on Saturday March 26th at Music Hall of Williamsburg. They are playing with Ninjasonik, Spankrock, DJ C-Lo and Hood Chef.

My Saturday Night at The Silent Barn~3/5/11

So, undecided where to go, The Silent Barn had a cool event move on over at the last moment featuring Gary War, Arid Hunter, Publicist and Innergaze. I recently saw Gary War at a secret show at Market Hotel which I wrote about and documented here. A warm night, meant that it was the first time we went on the roof of The Silent Barn in a long time too! Lots of people and lots of laser lights all over. It was a real rocking show. Relive it below.

My Friday Night at The McKibbin Lofts~3/4/11

So rumor around town was that BIG UPS was having an EP release party for their first EP entitled S/T.

Of course, having seen BIG UPS before, and having their demo running on my mp3 playlist for a while, I made my way right on over. I had taped them before at The Silent Barn and had a raging time covered in slime. Previous footage here. On the way to the show, some guy was passed the fuck out on the L train.

Subway

So there was 4 kegs with good beer, unlimited beers, a copy of the new BIG UPS EP for free and available here for free and over 100 people just chilling out in this awesome loft overlooking Manhattan and Bushwick. Supporting acts were Fantasia and Brutal Nun.

So the night wrapped up with the NYPD breaking up the party right after BIG UPS finished, so everyone bounced to the L train and went home.

Protip: Don’t drink a Joose out on the L train platform, or you will get cited like the 6 kids who were being cited by the cops. Check out Adrian Fussell’s pictures from BIG UPS and Brutal Nun’s performance here

My Sunday Night at The Silent Barn~2/27/11

So merely hours after the crazy bumping party at 13 Thames Street the night before, I headed out to the Silent Barn to see one of my favorite bands Filthy Savage, along with some other bands which I was excited to see as well. Honor Code, Kamp Koala and Squealer.

My Saturday Night at 13 Thames Street~2/26/11~2/27/11

So Saturday night was my first trip to 13 Thames Street. Superchief.tv and Gold Whistle were having a party for the release of the Zero 2 Mixtape Release. It is available here for free. Flyer below.

Despite the L train not working, a lot of people turned out, a few fights, booze flowing, drugs and lots of hot girls dancing the night away. One guy partied so hard, he passed out on the counter top at the entrance.

I only took a few pictures, because I knew there would be lots of photographers present such as Brock Fetch and Pixolid (that’s me in the white) The following DJ’s spun their records:

  • DRINK N DRIVE (10-11) (Indust Glue)
  • WC-KIDS (11-12)
  • COBRA KRAMES (12-1) (Gold Whistle)
  • ROOFEEO (1-2) (Ninja Sonik/DeathSet)
  • DIRTY FINGER (2-3) (Black Lable)
  • COOL HAND LUKE (3-4) (Ninja Sonik)
  • MURDERTRONICS (4-4:30)

Don’t wear white pants to a party.
